Bhupathi, Mahesh << BOO pah tee, mah HESH >> (1974-…), an Indian tennis star, ranks among the greatest doubles players in tennis history. Bhupathi has won 12 Grand Slam doubles titles—4 in men’s doubles and 8 in mixed doubles. A mixed doubles team is made up of a man and a woman.
From the mid-1990’s to the early 2000’s, Bhupathi and Leander Paes of India formed one of the world’s dominating doubles teams. They won the French Open and Wimbledon men’s titles in 1999 and the French Open again in 2001. Bhupathi won the 2002 US Open with Max Mirnyi of Belarus.
Bhupathi won his eight Grand Slam mixed doubles titles with seven different partners, including the 2009 Australian Open and the 2012 French Open with Sania Mirza of India. Bhupathi won the 1997 French Open with Rika Hiraki of Japan, the 1999 US Open with Ai Sugiyama of Japan, the 2002 Wimbledon with Elena Likhovsteva of Russia, the 2005 Wimbledon with Mary Pierce of France, the 2005 US Open with Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia, and the 2006 Australian Open with Martina Hingis of Switzerland.
Mahesh Shrinivas Bhupathi was born in Madras (now Chennai), India, on June 7, 1974. He played for the University of Mississippi in 1994 and 1995, winning the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) doubles championship in 1995. He turned professional in 1995. Bhupathi played for India in Davis Cup competition from 1995 to 2011. In 2016, he was named non-playing captain of the team. He and Paes also won the doubles championships at the 2002 and 2006 Asian Games .
