Stosur, Samantha (1984-…), was a star Australian professional tennis player. She is often called Sam Stosur. Stosur won grand slam championships as both a singles and a doubles player. The professional tennis grand slam consists of the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open.
Stosur had her greatest success in doubles. She and her American partner Lisa Raymond won the US Open women’s doubles title in 2005 and the French Open championship in 2006. Stosur and her Chinese partner Zhang Shuai won the Australian Open women’s doubles title in 2019 and the US Open women’s doubles title in 2021. Stosur won the mixed doubles championship at the 2005 Australian Open with Australian partner Scott Draper, and the Wimbledon championship with American Bob Bryan in 2008 and with Serbian Nenad Zimonjic in 2014. Her grand slam singles title came in 2011 at the US Open. She had been a women’s singles finalist at the French Open the previous year.
Samantha Jane Stosur was born in Brisbane, Australia, on March 30, 1984. She began playing tennis at the age of 8. At the age of 14, she joined the Queensland Academy of Sport. At 16, she joined the Australian Institute of Sport’s tennis program. Stosur turned professional in 1999. She was ranked number one in the world in women’s doubles in 2006 and 2007. As a singles player, she reached her highest ranking, number four in the world, in 2011. Stosur retired from playing tennis in 2023. Later that year, she assumed the position of captain (coach) of Australia’s Billie Jean King Cup team. The Billie Jean King Cup, an annual competition, is the world’s most important women’s team tennis championship.
