Canadian Library Association (CLA)

Canadian Library Association (CLA) was a national organization that provided leadership in library and information services in Canada. The CLA operated from 1946 to 2016. Its members included librarians, library trustees, workers, and suppliers. Most of its members worked in school, college, university, public, and special (corporate, government, nonprofit) libraries.

The association provided educational programs and promoted issues and legislation on behalf of libraries. It also offered library school scholarships and presented awards. The association published a national magazine called Feliciter. It also maintained microfilms of early Canadian newspapers. The association was founded in Hamilton, Ontario, in 1946. Its headquarters were in Ottawa, Ontario. In January 2016, the CLA membership voted to dissolve the association and replace it with a new national federation of library associations, the Canadian Federation of Library Associations (CFLA). The CFLA was officially incorporated on May 16, 2016.
