Markey, Ed

Markey, Ed (1946-…), became a United States senator in 2013. Markey, a Democrat, represents Massachusetts . Prior to his election to the Senate , Markey had served in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1976.

Edward John Markey was born in Malden, Massachusetts, on July 11, 1946. He received a bachelor’s degree from Boston College in 1968. He earned a law degree from the college in 1972. He also served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1968 to 1973. Markey won election to the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1972. He served through 1976, when he won a special election to the U.S. House.

As a congressman, Markey became known for his work on issues related to natural resources, energy, and the environment. He was also a long-time member of the House’s Homeland Security Committee and the Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the internet.

In June 2013, Markey won a special election to serve the remainder of the Senate term of John F. Kerry , who had resigned after being named U.S. secretary of state. Markey succeeded William Cowan , who had filled Kerry’s seat until Massachusetts voters chose a replacement in the special election. In 2014, Markey won election to a full six-year Senate term. He was reelected in 2020. As a senator, Markey continued his focus on policies related to energy, environmental protection, and telecommunications.
