Canterbury

Canterbury is the ancient religious center of Britain. It is the chief town in the district of Canterbury, which has a population of 157,429. Canterbury lies in southeastern England in the county of Kent. The town is a regional service center and has light industries. It is the home of the University of Kent. Canterbury’s history and architecture attract many tourists.

The archbishop of Canterbury is the spiritual head of the Church of England. Canterbury’s main attraction is its huge Gothic cathedral, which was begun in the 1000’s. Canterbury attracted many pilgrims during the Middle Ages. It was the destination of Geoffrey Chaucer’s travelers in his famous Canterbury Tales.
