Fenway Park

Fenway Park is the home of the Boston Red Sox of Major League Baseball (MLB). Opened in April 1912, Fenway Park is the oldest MLB stadium. The ballpark stands in the densely populated Fenway-Kenmore neighborhood in Boston , Massachusetts .

Fenway Park is famous for its towering left field wall known as the “Green Monster.” The green-painted wall stands 37.17 feet (11.33 meters) high and is only 310 to 315 feet (94 to 96 meters) from home plate. Many line drives that would be home runs in other parks bounce off the Green Monster for singles or doubles. But many fly balls that would be outs in other ballparks drift over the wall for home runs or hit the wall for base hits. The Green Monster did not get its name until 1947, when the giant wall (an original Fenway feature) was stripped of advertisements and painted green to match the rest of the ballpark.

Fenway Park’s centerfield has an odd-shaped “triangle” which peaks at 420 feet (130 meters) deep. Bleachers and a bullpen jut into right field, where the wall angles sharply to a foul pole just 302 feet (92 meters) from home plate. Several hundred seats were added atop the Green Monster in 2003 and atop the right field roof in 2004, but Fenway’s maximum seating capacity (37,731) remains among the smallest in the major leagues.

Fenway Park has hosted high school and college baseball games, boxing and soccer matches, and numerous hockey and football games. A number of musical performers have held concerts in the park. Fenway Park celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2012 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places that year.
