Cape Farewell is the northernmost point of the South Island of New Zealand. A narrow belt of sand called Farewell Spit stretches for 15 miles (24 kilometers) at the end of the cape. The British explorer James Cook gave the spit its name in 1770. He called it Cape Farewell because it was the last part of New Zealand he saw on his voyage there.
