Thomas, Nico

Thomas, Nico (1966-… ), an Indonesian boxer , won the International Boxing Federation (IBF) minimumweight world championship in 1989. Thomas won the title by defeating Samuth Sithnaruepol of Thailand. Later in 1989, Thomas lost the title in his first defense when he was knocked out by Eric Chavez of the Philippines. Thomas was the second Indonesian fighter to win a world championship. Super flyweight Ellyas Pical was the first, winning in 1985.

Nicholas “Nico” Thomas was born on June 10, 1966, in Ambon, Indonesia. He began training as a boxer at the age of 5 under the guidance of his older brother Charles, a former Indonesian amateur national champion. As an amateur boxer, the left-handed Nico Thomas won a silver medal at the Southeast Asian Games in 1985 and a gold medal in 1986 in the President’s Cup, an international competition for Asian countries. Thomas fought his first professional bout later in 1986. His last fight was in 2006. Thomas ended his boxing career with a record of 29 victories (18 by knockout), 23 defeats, and 6 draws.
