Mauboy, Jessica (1989-…), is an Australian singer and actress. She is one of the best-known Aboriginal woman musicians in the world. Mauboy’s songs are influenced by pop and rhythm and blues (R&B). Mauboy has also been noted for her activism with Aboriginal causes and charitable organizations.
Jessica Hilda Mauboy was born on Aug. 4, 1989, in Darwin, Northern Territory. Through her mother, she is a member of the Kuku Yalanji people. The Kuku Yalanji are an Australian Aboriginal group who have traditionally lived in the rain forest regions of northern Queensland.
Mauboy’s musical career began at age 14, when she won a local talent competition that earned her a recording contract with Sony. She achieved national fame in 2006, as a contestant on the reality television program “Australian Idol” (2003-2009). Her debut album, The Journey, was released in 2007. Later in 2007, Mauboy joined the Young Divas, an all-woman musical group from Australia. She sang on the group’s second album, New Attitude (2007). Mauboy left the group in 2008 to work on her solo career.
Been Waiting, Mauboy’s second solo album, was released in 2008. In 2009, she starred in the musical motion picture Bran Nue Dae. Later that year, Mauboy joined the American singer Beyoncé on her concert tour of Australia. Mauboy’s next album, Get ‘Em Girls (2010), reached the top 10 on the Australia Recording Industry Association (ARIA) music charts.
Mauboy starred in The Sapphires (2012), a biographical film about an Aboriginal musical group from the 1960’s. The film’s soundtrack, which featured Mauboy, reached number one on the ARIA music charts. Mauboy reached new heights of success with the release of her album Beautiful (2013). She won the 2013 ARIA Award for Best Female Artist. Mauboy’s performance at the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest was the competition’s first by a non-European solo artist.
Returning to television, Mauboy starred in the Australian drama series “Secret Daughter” (2016-2017). She sang on the soundtrack of the series, which was released as two albums in 2016 and 2017. Mauboy was chosen to represent Australia at the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest. Her fourth solo album, Hilda, was released in 2019.
