Kumble, Anil

Kumble, Anil (1970-…), was one of India’s greatest cricketers. Kumble was a right-arm leg break bowler and a right-hand batsman. He became India’s all-time leading wicket taker in both Test matches (619) and One Day International (337) cricket. Kumble’s 619 wickets in Test competition ranks as the third highest in cricket history, behind Shane Warne of Australia and Muttiah Muralitharan of Sri Lanka. In 1999, Kumble became the first Indian cricketer to take all 10 wickets in a Test innings. In 2007, he was named India’s Test captain for the home series against Pakistan. Kumble was born on Oct. 17, 1970, in Bangalore (now Bengaluru) in the state of Karnataka. He made his domestic debut with Karnataka in the 1989-1990 season and was a member of the team until 2009. He also played domestic cricket in England with Northamptonshire (1995), Leicestershire (2000), and Surrey (2006). Kumble made both his Test and One Day International debuts in 1990. He retired from international competition in 2008 and from domestic competition in 2011. From 2012 to 2021, Kumble served as chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Cricket Committee.
