Capulin << KAP yuh luhn >> Volcano National Monument is in northeastern New Mexico. Capulin Volcano is a scoria cone, a cone-shaped mountain of cinder that formed during an explosive volcanic eruption. It rises 8,215 feet (2,504 meters) above sea level and 1,500 feet (457 meters) above the surrounding plain. It has a rim diameter of 1,450 feet (442 meters). The monument was established in 1916.
