Chaffetz, Jason (1967- …), a Republican from Utah , served as a member of the United States House of Representatives from 2009 to 2017. Prior to his election to the House, Chaffetz had owned a communications company.
Jason E. Chaffetz was born in Los Gatos, in west-central California, on March 26, 1967. He attended Brigham Young University in Utah, where he was a placekicker for the football team. He graduated with a degree in communications in 1989. Chaffetz was raised in the Jewish religion, but he converted to the Mormon faith while living in Utah.
Chaffetz soon began a career specializing in corporate communications and marketing. In 2003, he became the campaign manager for the successful campaign of Jon Huntsman, Jr. , to become governor of Utah. Chaffetz then served about 10 months as Huntsman’s chief of staff. The chief of staff manages the governor’s staff and serves as a close adviser to the governor. Late in 2005, Chaffetz returned to his business career as head of his own corporate communications firm, Maxtera Utah.
In 2008, Chaffetz won election to represent Utah’s Third Congressional District. The district covers a large area of southeastern Utah. He won election every two years through 2016. As a congressman, Chaffetz focused on eliminating government waste. He was a key member of the committee investigating the 2012 terrorist attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghāzī , Libya. From 2015 to 2017, he served as chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. Chaffetz also served on the House Judiciary Committee. He resigned from Congress on June 30, 2017.
