New York City FC is a professional soccer team in the United States. FC stands for football club. Soccer is called football in much of the world. Also called NYCFC, the team competes in the Eastern Conference of Major League Soccer (MLS), the top soccer league in the United States and Canada. The team plays its home games at Yankee Stadium in New York City.
New York City FC played its first MLS season in 2015. The team’s roster included veteran international stars Frank Lampard of England, Andrea Pirlo of Italy, and David Villa of Spain. In 2016, the team qualified for its first playoff appearance. The team won its first MLS Cup championship in 2021.
New York City FC has twice qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League. CONCACAF stands for Confederation of North, Central America, and Caribbean Association Football, and the league is an annual tournament among that region’s best professional clubs. New York City FC reached the semifinals of the tournament in 2022.
