Houston Dynamo FC is a professional soccer team in the United States. FC stands for football club. Soccer is called football in much of the world. The team competes in the Western Conference of Major League Soccer (MLS), the top soccer league in the United States and Canada. The team plays its home games at Shell Energy Stadium in Houston, Texas.
The Houston Dynamo joined MLS in 2006. The club enjoyed immediate success, winning both the 2006 and 2007 MLS Cup championships. In both championships, Houston defeated the New England Revolution. The Dynamo returned to the MLS Cup finals in 2011 and 2012, but lost to the LA Galaxy each time.
Houston’s MLS Cup finals appearances qualified the club for the CONCACAF Champions League, an annual tournament among that region’s best professional clubs. CONCACAF stands for Confederation of North, Central America, and Caribbean Association Football. The Dynamo has advanced as far as the semifinals in the Champions League. Houston won the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, an annual tournament open to amateur and professional soccer clubs, in 2018 and 2023. In 2020, the Dynamo added FC to their name.
