Laxman, V. V. S. (1974-…), became one of the outstanding batsmen in Indian cricket . Laxman was named one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year for 2002. Wisden is a reference book published in the United Kingdom that is considered the standard reference work for the sport. Waxman’s innings of 281 runs against Australia in 2001 was ranked sixth in Wisden’s list of the 100 greatest batting innings in cricket history. He was part of a strong Indian batting lineup that also included Sachin Tendulkar . Together they made India one of the best and most feared teams in the world. In 2011, the government of India awarded Laxman the Padma Shri award, India’s fourth highest civilian award. Many of Laxman’s finest performances came against Australia. He had two double centuries in Tests, both against Australia. Six of his 17 Test hundreds and 4 of his 6 One Day International (ODI) hundreds also came against Australia.

After graduating from high school, he considered attending medical school but instead chose to play cricket as a career. Laxman bats right-handed, and his bowling style is right-arm off break. He made his Test debut in 1996 against South Africa . His last Test was against Australia in 2012. He made his ODI debut in 1998 against Zimbabwe , and his final ODI appearance was against South Africa in 2006. Laxman played nearly all his domestic cricket for Hyderabad, beginning in 1992. He also played for Lancashire in English county cricket in 2007 and 2009. Laxman retired from international competition in 2012.
