Rogers, Mattie

Rogers, Mattie (1995-…), is a leading American weightlifter. Rogers holds all three American records in both the women’s 76-kilogram (168-pound) class and the women’s 81-kilogram (179-pound) class. She set the snatch, clean and jerk, and total weight American records in the 81-kilogram class in 2021. She set the three American records in the 76-kilogram class in 2022. The total weight is the weight of the heaviest successful snatch added to the weight of the heaviest successful clean and jerk. Rogers is 5 feet 7 inches (170 centimeters) tall.

Rogers won three bronze medals in the 69-kilogram (152-pound) snatch, clean and jerk, and total weight categories at the 2017 world championships. Those medals were the first world championship medals won by an American woman in 12 years. She also won a bronze medal in the 71-kilogram (156-pound) clean and jerk at the 2018 world championships. She became the first American woman weightlifter to win medals in consecutive years since Robin Byrd in 1993 and 1994. In 2019, Rogers’s bronze medals in the 2017 world championships’ 69-kilogram snatch and total weight categories were upgraded to silver medals after another weightlifter was disqualified for doping. Doping is the use of prohibited substances to improve an athlete’s performance in sporting events. At the 2019 world championships, Rogers won a bronze medal in the snatch and silver medals in the clean and jerk and total weight categories in the 71-kilogram class.

Martha Ann Rogers was born on Aug. 23, 1995, in Apopka, Florida, near Orlando. She was a cheerleader and competed in gymnastics before turning to weightlifting. Rogers began competing in weightlifting in 2014. She has attended Valencia College and the University of Central Florida, both in Orlando. She was the World University champion in the 69-kilogram class in 2016.

Rogers won silver medals in the 69-kilogram class at the Pan American championships in 2016, 2017, and 2018 in the total weight category. At the 2019 Pan American championships, she won the silver medal in the 71-kilogram class in the total weight category. She won the total weight gold medal in the 81-kilogram class at the 2020 Pan American championships. The 2020 Pan American championships were held in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the 2021 Pan American championships, Rogers won the total weight silver medal in the 76-kilogram class. She won the total weight gold medal in the 76-kilogram class at the 2022 Pan American championships.
