Khan, Sadiq (1970-…), became the mayor of London , the capital of the United Kingdom , in May 2016. Khan, a London native of Pakistani descent, is the city’s first Muslim mayor. Khan is a member of the Labour Party . He succeeded Boris Johnson , a Conservative , who had been London mayor since 2008.
Sadiq Aman Khan was born in London on Oct. 8, 1970, the son of Pakistani immigrants. His father was a bus driver and his mother a seamstress. Khan joined the Labour Party while still in high school. He later studied law at the University of North London. Khan practiced as a human rights lawyer until 2004. He entered Parliament in 2005 as representative for Greater London’s Tooting constituency (voting district), where he grew up, in the House of Commons . He held various ministry positions in the British government before concentrating on his run for London mayor in 2015.
