Campbell, Cate (1992-…), was a champion Australian swimmer who won medals at four consecutive Summer Olympic Games. Campbell won medals at the Summer Olympics in 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020. In those games, she won a total of eight medals—four gold, one silver, and three bronze.
Campbell excelled in individual freestyle events and as a member of relay teams. She won gold medals at the 2012, 2016, and 2020 Olympics as a member of the Australian women’s 400-meter freestyle relay teams. Campbell also was part of 400-meter medley relay teams that won a silver medal in 2016 and a gold medal in 2020. At the 2008 Olympics, she won bronze medals in the 50-meter freestyle and the 400-meter freestyle relay. Campbell also won a bronze medal in the 100-meter freestyle at the 2020 Olympics.
In 2007, Campbell won gold medals in the 50-meter freestyle and the 400-meter freestyle relay at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival in Sydney. From 2009 to 2019, Campbell won four gold medals, five silver medals, and three bronze medals at the FINA World (now World Aquatics) Championships. World Aquatics is the organization that governs international competitive swimming. Campbell also won three gold medals and a silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland and three gold medals and a silver medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia.
Cate Natalie Campbell was born on May 20, 1992, in Blantyre, Malawi. She moved to Australia with her family in 2001. In 2014, Campbell was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM), presented by the government of Australia for achievement or meritorious service. In 2024, Campbell retired from swimming. Campbell’s younger sister, Bronte, is also an Olympic champion swimmer.
