Young was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, on Aug. 24, 1972. His family moved to Indiana when he was a boy. He excelled at soccer, and his Carmel High School team won a state championship. After high school, Young joined the U.S. Navy and attended the Naval Academy Preparatory School from 1990 to 1991. He then entered the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. After he graduated in 1995, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps, in which he served until 2000. Also in 2000, Young received a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Chicago. The following year, he earned a master’s degree in American politics from the University of London in the United Kingdom.

In 2001, Young briefly worked for the Heritage Foundation, a conservative public policy research organization based in Washington, D.C. Young then joined the staff of U.S. Senator Richard Lugar of Indiana. Young later returned to Indiana, where he worked as a management consultant while attending law school. A management consultant helps companies improve the way they do business. In 2006, Young received a law degree from the Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis (now the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law). He then worked as a lawyer.

In 2010, Young was elected to represent Indiana’s 9th District in the U.S. House of Representatives. The district covers the south-central part of the state. Young was reelected in 2012 and 2014. In Congress, Young focused on such issues as supporting small businesses and aiding military veterans. He was also a vocal opponent of the health insurance reform law known as Obamacare. In 2016, Young defeated Democrat Evan Bayh, a former Indiana governor and senator, for a seat in the U.S. Senate. Young won reelection to the Senate in 2022.
