Paris Saint-Germain FC was founded in 1970. The team played mostly in lower-tier leagues until being promoted to Ligue 1 in 1974. The team enjoyed winning seasons for several years before winning the Coupe de France (French Cup), France’s premier soccer tournament, in 1982 and again in 1983. PSG won the Coupe de France again in 1993, 1995, 1998, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2020, 2021, and 2024. The club’s 15 Coupe de France titles are the most won by any team in French soccer history. PSG’s fiercest rival is Olympique de Marseille, a club that was founded in 1899. PSG has finished 12 seasons with the best record in Ligue 1.
PSG is a regular competitor in the UEFA Champions League, Europe’s elite annual club tournament. UEFA stands for the Union of European Football Associations. In 1996, PSG won the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, a former tournament among Europe’s domestic league champions.
