Mnuchin, Steven

Mnuchin, << mih NOO chihn >> Steven (1962-…), served as secretary of the United States Department of the Treasury from 2017 to 2021. In the position, he served in the Cabinet of President Donald J. Trump . Prior to being named treasury secretary, Mnuchin had served as the finance chairman for Trump’s 2016 campaign. He had also been an executive for several financial firms.

Steven Terner Mnuchin was born on Dec. 21, 1962, in New York City . He attended Yale University , where he was a publisher for the school’s newspaper. He received a bachelor’s degree from the university in 1985. He then began a 17-year career in finance at Goldman Sachs, a prominent New York investment-banking firm where his father, Robert Mnuchin, had been long employed. Steven had become the chief information officer of Goldman Sachs before leaving the firm in the early 2000’s. Mnuchin then founded or served as an executive for a number of banking or investment firms.

In 2016, Mnuchin became the finance chairman of Trump’s campaign for president. He also advised Trump on economic issues. After Trump was elected president in November 2016, he nominated Mnuchin for treasury secretary. The U.S. Senate confirmed the nomination in February 2017.
