Rizzo, Anthony

Rizzo, Anthony (1989-…), is one of the best players in Major League Baseball (MLB). Rizzo plays for the New York Yankees in the American League . From 2012 to 2021, he played first base for the Chicago Cubs in the National League (NL). He is known for his consistent and powerful hitting as well as his excellent defense. Rizzo has earned four Gold Gloves as the best defensive first baseman in the National League. He has also been named to three NL All-Star teams.

Rizzo bats and throws left-handed. From 2012 to 2019, Rizzo hit .277 and averaged 27 home runs, 81 runs scored, and 90 runs batted in per season for the Cubs. Rizzo also has a knack for being hit by pitches. He has led MLB in that category three times, in 2015, 2017, and 2019. Rizzo was a key part of the Cubs team that won the World Series in 2016. The World Series victory was the first for the Cubs since 1908, ending the longest winless streak (108 years) in baseball history.

Anthony Vincent Rizzo was born on Aug. 8, 1989, in Fort Lauderdale , Florida . He excelled at baseball in high school. The Boston Red Sox drafted Rizzo in 2007, and he began playing in Boston’s minor league system. In 2010, he was traded to the San Diego Padres . He made his MLB debut with San Diego in 2011. The Padres dealt Rizzo to the Cubs in 2012. In 2021, the Cubs traded Rizzo to the Yankees.
