Goji, also called goji berry or wolfberry, is a bright red-orange berry that grows on shrubs native to Asia. The berries are primarily grown in China and Mongolia. Goji berries grow on two species (kinds) of boxthorn shrub. The berries of both species taste similar but differ slightly in sweetness. Goji berries have been used in both Chinese cuisine and Chinese traditional medicine for thousands of years. They are rich in antioxidants, protein, and vitamins and minerals.
Practitioners of Chinese medicine claim that goji provides energy, reduces anxiety, lowers blood sugar, defends against the common cold, and boosts skin and eye health. Such claims have helped goji to become popular around the world as a dietary supplement. However, the health benefits of goji remain unclear. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned several distributors of goji products against exaggerating health benefits or claiming such benefits without scientific proof.
Goji berries are commonly sold dried, to be eaten as a snack or added to other foods. Goji is also available in powder or capsule form.
