Anthony Marshon Davis, Jr., was born on March 11, 1993, in Chicago, Illinois. Davis was a good athlete as a child, but he put more effort into his studies than into sports. He attended Perspectives Charter School, an academically oriented high school that had no gymnasium. During his junior year, Davis grew about 6 inches (15 centimeters). In the summer of 2010, he gained national attention while playing for an Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball program. In his senior year of high school, Davis averaged 32 points, 22 rebounds, and 7 blocked shots per game, but his team had a losing record. He then attended the University of Kentucky. As a freshman during the 2011-2012 season, he led the team to a 38-2 record and a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) championship. He also led the nation in blocked shots and won the Naismith Award as the nation’s top collegiate player.
The New Orleans Hornets selected Davis first overall in the 2012 NBA draft. He was voted to the league’s All-Rookie team for his play during the 2012-2013 season. The Hornets changed their name to the Pelicans for the 2013-2014 season. That season, Davis was selected to his first All-Star team, and he led the NBA in blocked shots for the first time. Davis has also been selected to multiple All-NBA and All-Defensive teams. The Pelicans traded Davis to the Lakers following the 2018-2019 season. Davis and star forward LeBron James helped lead the Lakers to the NBA championship in the 2019-2020 season. Davis was also a member of United States national teams that won gold medals at the 2012 and 2024 Summer Olympic Games.
