Joshua Patrick Allen was born May 21, 1996, in Firebaugh, California, west of Fresno. He was raised on a farm and helped his parents grow cantaloupes, cotton, and wheat. Allen played on his high school football, basketball, and baseball teams. After graduation, he attended Reedley College, a community college near Fresno. He impressed observers as the school’s starting quarterback during the 2014 season, earning a football scholarship from the University of Wyoming in 2015.
A broken collarbone ended Allen’s first season at Wyoming, but by the following season, he was back on the field. In 2016, Allen helped to lead Wyoming to its first college bowl game since 2011, but the team lost. Allen attracted potential interest as an NFL draft pick in 2017, but he chose to finish out his third year at Wyoming. Allen graduated in 2017 with a degree in social science. He contemplated entering the 2017 NFL Draft, but he instead chose to play a third season at Wyoming, using his final year of eligibility. The Bills drafted Allen seventh overall in the 2018 draft.
Allen scored 42 touchdowns during the 2021 season, second only to Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady, who scored 45. Allen threw for 4,544 yards in the 2020 season, setting the Bills team record for single-season passing yards. Allen scored more touchdowns over his first four seasons (135) than any quarterback besides Dan Marino, who earned 144 from 1983 through 1986.
