Chain gang is a group of prisoners chained together for labor. They traditionally have worn leg shackles connected by a short chain. A longer chain connects one convict to another. Chain gangs were once used to build roads in the southern United States. Many people consider doing such work as a member of a chain gang to be harsh and brutal punishment.
