Changamire Empire was an empire in what is now Zimbabwe. It was founded in the late 1400’s by a group called the Rozwi. The Rozwi were a southern Karanga group who had rebelled against the Mwanamutapa Empire. The new empire became stronger than the Mwanamutapa Empire, and the Rozwi took over the city of Zimbabwe, which stood near present-day Masvingo, Zimbabwe. The Rozwi built the city’s largest structures. The Changamire Empire was prosperous and peaceful until Nguni people from the south defeated much of it in the 1830’s.
