Creaghe, Caroline

Creaghe, Caroline (1860-1944), participated in an exploration of territory at the base of the Gulf of Carpentaria, Australia, in 1883. Creaghe was probably the first white woman to visit this territory. She accompanied her first husband, Captain Harry Creaghe, and the explorer Ernest Favenc on the six-month expedition. They faced great hardships, including food and water shortages, exhausting heat, and hostile Aboriginal people. Creaghe kept a diary of her experiences, parts of which were published in 1976.

Emily Caroline Robinson was born onboard a ship in the Bay of Bengal on Nov. 1, 1860. Harry Creaghe died in 1886. On Dec. 10, 1889, Caroline married Joseph Barnett and became known as Caroline Barnett. She died in Sydney on Nov. 11, 1944.
