Cruise, Tom (1962-…), is a popular American motion-picture star known for his striking good looks and self-confident manner. Since the mid-1980’s, Cruise’s enormously profitable films have made him a superstar. He has been nominated for several Academy Awards, and has won several Golden Globe Awards, for his acting.
Thomas Cruise Mapother IV was born in Syracuse, New York, on July 3, 1962. He began acting while still in high school. Cruise made his film debut in Endless Love (1981). He had several juvenile roles in the 1980’s, notably in Taps (1981) and The Outsiders (1983). Cruise’s first major success was in the coming-of-age comedy Risky Business (1983). He became a star in the military drama Top Gun (1986).
Cruise’s films of the late 1900’s include The Color of Money (1986), Rain Man (1988), Born on the Fourth of July (1989), A Few Good Men (1992), The Firm (1993), Interview with the Vampire (1994), Jerry Maguire (1996), Magnolia (1999), and Eyes Wide Shut (1999). His films of the 2000’s include Vanilla Sky (2001), Minority Report (2002), The Last Samurai (2003), Collateral (2004), War of the Worlds (2005), Lions for Lambs (2007), Tropic Thunder and Valkyrie (both 2008), Knight and Day (2010), Jack Reacher (2012), Oblivion (2013), Edge of Tomorrow (2014), American Made (2017), and Top Gun: Maverick (2022). He also stars in the “Mission Impossible” series of action films, which began with Mission: Impossible (1996).
Cruise was married to the American actress Mimi Rogers from 1987 to 1990, the Australian actress Nicole Kidman from 1990 to 2001, and the American actress Katie Holmes from 2006 to 2012.
