Cudahy, Michael

Cudahy << KUHD uh hee >>, Michael (1841-1910), an American meat packer, developed and introduced cold-storage facilities in packing plants. This made possible year-round meat curing and livestock marketing. Cudahy went to work for a meat packer in Milwaukee at the age of 14. In 1875, he became a partner in Armour and Company. With P. D. Armour, he formed the Armour-Cudahy Company in 1887. In 1890, he founded the Cudahy Packing Company, one of the largest such companies in the United States, in Omaha, Nebraska. Cudahy was born in Callan, Ireland, on Dec. 7, 1841. He came to the United States with his parents in 1849. He died on Nov. 27, 1910.
