Amalgam is an alloy of mercury with some other metal. Many dentists use silver and other metal-based amalgams when filling cavities. These amalgams, soft at first, become hard, lasting fillings. Some manufacturers coat the zinc plates in electric batteries with mercury. This amalgamation reduces the rate at which the zinc dissolves in the battery liquids when the batteries lie idle.
