Dubuque << duh BYOOK >> (pop. 59,667; met. area pop. 99,266) is a port city in Iowa on the west bank of the Mississippi River, opposite the Illinois-Wisconsin border. Dubuque was named for Julien Dubuque, who began to mine lead there in 1788. Lead mining and fur trading have been replaced by such industries as equipment manufacturing, tourism, health care, information technology services, financial services, and publishing. Clarke University, Loras College, the University of Dubuque and its theological seminary, and Wartburg Theological Seminary are in the city. Tourist attractions include greyhound races, casino gambling, and paddle-wheel riverboat rides. Dubuque was first settled in 1833. A town government was organized in 1837. Iowa’s first newspaper was published there in 1836. The city has a council-manager government.
