Editorial is usually a brief newspaper or magazine article that gives the publication’s position on current events. It may also be presented over radio, television, or the Internet. An editorial may criticize, praise, or merely discuss the actions of some public official or group. Newspaper editorials often encourage actions that the editor of the paper thinks will benefit the community. For instance, an editorial may back a campaign for more police officers. Editorials are also used to express strong political views. Editorials are usually unsigned, so that they appear as the official opinion of the news organization.
An editorial usually begins by stating an issue. It may end with a conclusion in the form of advice, a plea, or a command. In style, it is much like an essay (see Essay ). Editorials usually are in some clearly marked form when they appear in print. They often appear on a special editorial page. Magazine editorials usually discuss problems of national interest and scope.
