English, William Hayden (1822-1896), was the Democratic candidate for vice president of the United States in 1880. He and presidential candidate Winfield S. Hancock were defeated by Republicans James A. Garfield and Chester A. Arthur. English was a member of the United States House of Representatives from Indiana from 1853 to 1861. He also served as a member of the Indiana house of representatives in 1851 and 1852. He was born on Aug. 27, 1822, in Lexington, Indiana. He died on Feb. 7, 1896.
