English springer spaniel is a sporting dog that forces game to spring from hiding places. Hunters use this dog more often than the cocker spaniel because it is larger and stronger. It stands about 18 to 21 inches (46 to 53 centimeters) high at the shoulder and weighs from 37 to 55 pounds (17 to 25 kilograms). The dog’s coat is fairly long and grows thick enough to resist water and brambles. The coat may be reddish-brown and white, black and white, or a combination of white, tan, and black or reddish-brown. The dog is also a popular pet. See also Spaniel.
