Evert, Chris (1954-…), an American tennis champion, ranks as one of the greatest female tennis players in the history of the sport. Evert never ranked lower than fourth from the year she turned professional in 1972 until her retirement in 1989. She was noted for her technically perfect forehand and two-handed backhand, both delivered with accuracy, power, and depth. She was at her best on clay court surfaces and won 125 consecutive matches on clay from August 1973 to May 1979. Evert won 18 Grand Slam titles, winning Wimbledon in England three times, the French Open seven times, the United States Open six times, and the Australian Open twice.
Christine Marie Evert was born on Dec. 21, 1954, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. From 1979 to 1987, she was married to the British tennis player John Lloyd and competed under the name Chris Evert Lloyd. She was married to Andy Mill, a former U.S. Olympic skier, from 1988 to 2006 and to the Australian golf star Greg Norman from June 2008 to December 2009. Evert won 154 professional singles titles during her career. After retiring as a player in 1989, she served as a tennis analyst for NBC television from 1990 to 2003. She became the publisher of Tennis magazine in 2001. Evert also runs a tennis academy in Florida.
