Farley, James Aloysius << FAHR lee, jaymz `al` oh IHSH uhs >> (1888-1976), a politician and businessman, served as postmaster general of the United States from 1933 to 1940. During his term as postmaster general, which was then a Cabinet post, Farley greatly improved airmail service. From 1932 to 1940, he was chairman of the Democratic National Committee, and he managed the national presidential campaigns of Franklin D. Roosevelt during the elections of 1932 and 1936. In 1940, Farley resigned his Cabinet and party positions because he opposed a third presidential term for Roosevelt. Farley also served as chairman of the New York State Democratic Committee from 1930 until he resigned in 1944.
Farley was born on May 30, 1888, in Grassy Point, New York. He later entered the building supply business. He became chairman of the Coca-Cola Export Corporation in 1940. He died on June 9, 1976.
