Flexner, Abraham

Flexner, Abraham (1866-1959), became a leading authority on higher education, especially in the field of medicine. In 1930, he organized and became the first director of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, New Jersey (see Institute for Advanced Study). Flexner’s study of American medical colleges, published in 1910, caused sweeping changes in curriculum and teaching methods. He was secretary of the General Education Board, an organization that provided financial assistance to United States education, from 1912 to 1928. Flexner was born on Nov. 13, 1866, in Louisville, Kentucky. He died on Sept. 21, 1959.
