Flowering tobacco is any of a group of plants that produce colorful flowers with a five-pointed star shape. Flowering tobacco is grown for its sweet-scented flowers. It grows wild primarily in the tropics of the Western Hemisphere. However, it is cultivated in the United States.
The leaves of flowering tobacco are hairy and sticky. The flowers are yellow, purple, red, or white, and shaped like long tubes that flare open at the end. Flowering tobacco is sensitive to cold and should be sheltered. It can be grown from seed in rich, light soil. The seeds should be planted in a hotbed or greenhouse in the early spring and later transplanted outdoors.
