Fort Leavenworth, << LEHV uhn wurth, >> Kansas, is the home of the United States Army Combined Arms Center. It also houses the Army Command and General Staff College, the Army’s senior tactical school. The fort covers about 5,600 acres (2,300 hectares) on the Missouri River, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) northwest of Kansas City. The Army operates a military prison there, the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks. The fort was named for Brigadier General Henry Leavenworth, who founded it in 1827.
