Fort McPherson << muhk FUR suhn >>, Georgia, served as the headquarters of the United States Army Forces Command. This command supervises the combat readiness of all the Army’s active and reserve forces. The fort covered about 480 acres (190 hectares) within the city limits of Atlanta. The Army made it a post in 1889 and named it after Major General James B. McPherson, a Union Army commander killed in the American Civil War (1861-1865). Fort McPherson closed in 2011. The headquarters of the United States Army Forces Command then moved to Fort Bragg (now Fort Liberty), North Carolina.
