Four Corners is the only place in the United States where four states meet. Arizona , Colorado , New Mexico , and Utah come together at this point. A monument marks the site, identified during an 1868 federal government survey. The monument includes a granite and brass marker that bears the seals of the four states.
In 2009, officials from the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) said that the 1868 survey had been inaccurate. The NGS said that the monument stood about 21/2 miles (4 kilometers) to the west of the actual intersection of the four states. Some surveyors disputed the NGS findings, however. In addition, legal experts pointed out that the state boundary markers had become legally binding once the four states accepted the 1868 survey. As a result, the location of the monument is correct.
