Fragmentation, << `frag` muhn TAY shuhn, >> is the breaking of any material into small pieces. The fragmentation bomb or shell is used against troops, trucks, and grounded aircraft. It has a heavy case that breaks into thousands of small fragments (pieces) when it explodes.
Some fragmentation bombs are cases containing hundreds of small bombs, or bomblets. These bombs vary in size. Fragmentation shells fired from artillery guns have fuses usually set so the shells burst in the air just above the enemy troops. The term fragmentation is also used in mining to refer to the blasting apart of rock.
