Freeman, Orville Lothrop (1918-2003), served as secretary of agriculture from 1961 to 1969, under Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. He was governor of Minnesota from 1955 to 1961.
Freeman graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1940. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Marine Corps. Freeman was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart. After the war, he earned his law degree and was a member of a Minneapolis law firm from 1947 to 1955. Freeman was chairman of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party from 1948 to 1950. He was born on May 9, 1918, in Minneapolis and died on Feb. 20, 2003.
