Fréjus Tunnels

Fréjus, << fray ZHOOS, >> Tunnels are two tunnels—one a railroad tunnel and the other a motor-traffic tunnel—that connect the Italian province of Turin with the French province of Savoy. The tunnels run under Fréjus Peak in the Alps.

The railroad tunnel, which was built between 1857 and 1871, was the first tunnel to be cut through the Alps. The mechanical drill powered by compressed air was used for the first time in building this tunnel. The railroad tunnel is 8.5 miles (13.7 kilometers) long. It was formerly called Mont Cenis Tunnel. The motor-traffic tunnel was completed in 1980 and is 8 miles (12.9 kilometers) long.
