Gable, Clark (1901-1960), was a popular romantic star of American motion pictures. He appeared in about 70 films. Gable was best known for his role as the dashing adventurer Rhett Butler in Gone with the Wind (1939). He won the 1934 Academy Award as best actor for his performance in It Happened One Night.
Gable, whose full name was William Clark Gable, was born on Feb. 1, 1901, in Cadiz, Ohio. He worked in a tire factory and as a lumberjack before becoming an actor. Gable began his movie career in The Painted Desert (1931). His major films included Red Dust (1932), Manhattan Melodrama (1934), Mutiny on the Bounty (1935), San Francisco (1936), Boom Town (1940), Command Decision (1948), and The Misfits (1961). Gable served as an aerial gunner in the Army Air Forces from 1942 to 1944, during World War II. Gable was married to the American actress Carole Lombard from 1939 until her death in an airplane crash in 1942. Gable died on Nov. 16, 1960.
