Gale, Zona

Gale, Zona, << ZOH nuh >> (1874-1938), was an American author known for her descriptions of small-town life in the Midwest. Her hometown of Portage, Wisconsin, provided the material for much of her fiction.

Gale’s early works were sentimental and romantic. In later works, Gale wrote in a harshly realistic style. Most critics consider these writings her best. These works include the novels Birth (1918), Miss Lulu Bett (1920), and Faint Perfume (1923), and the short stories published in the collections Yellow Gentians and Blue (1927) and Bridal Pond (1930). Gale won a Pulitzer Prize in 1921 for her dramatization of Miss Lulu Bett.

Zona Gale was born on Aug. 26, 1874. She died on Dec. 27, 1938.
