Gallup, New Mexico (pop. 21,899), is called the American Indian capital because it is the trading center of Southwest tribes. It is about 135 miles (217 kilometers) west of Albuquerque. The Navajo, Zuni, and Hopi reservations are nearby. The Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial is held in Gallup each August. South of Gallup lie the ancient ruins of Hawikuh, one of the legendary Seven Cities of Cíbola visited by Spanish explorer Francisco Vásquez de Coronado in 1540. Gallup was founded in 1881. The city has a council-manager form of government. Important industries include tourism and Indian arts and crafts.
