Garcia Iniguez, Calixto, << gahr SEE ah EE nyee gays, kah LEES toh >> (1839-1898), was a Cuban lawyer and revolutionary general. He commanded a Cuban army against Spain during both the Ten Years’ War (1868-1878) and in the revolt of 1895 to 1898. Before the Spanish-American War (1898), U.S. Army Lieutenant Andrew S. Rowan carried a message to Garcia asking what aid the United States should send. This inspired Elbert Hubbard’s essay, “A Message to Garcia.” Garcia was born in Holguin, Cuba, on Aug. 4, 1839. He died on Dec. 11, 1898, in Washington, D.C.
