Garrett, Lesley

Garrett, Lesley (1955-…), is a British opera singer who helped bring opera to a wider audience through her television appearances and recordings. A spirited, expressive and sensual soprano, she became known for playing such roles as Adele in the 1991 English National Opera production of Die Fledermaus by the Austrian composer Johann Strauss, Jr.

Garrett was born on April 10, 1955, in Doncaster, Yorkshire. She studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London from 1977 to 1979 before joining the English National Opera in 1980. She made her official stage debut that year as Dorinda in the German composer George Frideric Handel‘s opera Orlando. Garrett has won acclaim for lead roles in the Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi‘s A Masked Ball in 1986 and in the Czech composer Leoš Janáček‘s The Cunning Little Vixen in 1996.
